Tomb of Khai Dinh

Tomb of Khai Dinh, in spite of its modest scale, is the most extravagant royal tomb in Hue. The constructions started in 1920 and took 11 years to finish. It is exclusively perched on Chau E Mountain, around 10km from the city centre. The tomb was built with modern materials and unique design blended between Asian and European styles (put it literally “neo-classicism”). It can only be accessed by a 37-step stone gate with two huge dragon designs on the sidewalls. Climbing another 29 steps, you will reach the royal courtyard with an octagonal monument guarded by two rows of statues at the centre. You will have to pass three higher levels in order to access its elaborate altar, which offers truly breathtaking views over the surroundings. Tomb of Khai Dinh is the most commonly visited royal tomb in Hue. Thus, if you only have time to drop in one tomb, make it this one.
